On September 3, 2025, a grand ceremony was held on Tiananmen Square in Beijing to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti Fascist War. When General Secretary Xi Jinping emphasized with a resounding voice the importance of "remembering history, honoring martyrs, cherishing peace, and creating the future", when 45 teams marched through Chang'an Avenue with steel like vigor, when 80000 peace doves flapped their wings and flew high, and 80000 balloons soared into the sky, my eyes moistened several times and my emotions surged. As a technology worker who has returned from studying abroad, I deeply understand that the spirit of the War of Resistance Against Japan is the spiritual code for the continuous vitality of the Chinese nation, and it is also the spiritual beacon for those who study abroad and serve the country in the new era. And inheriting this spirit means using the pen of technological self-reliance and self-improvement, especially breaking through the bottleneck technology in key areas of national defense and military industry, and continuing to write the chapter of "a strong country with me" to serve the country.
1、 Echoes of History: From the "Great Wall of Flesh and Blood" to the "Great Wall of Technology", the great spirit of resistance against Japan is the source of power that transcends time and space
At the conference, General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out that "the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression was a great and arduous war... It made significant contributions to saving human civilization and safeguarding world peace." After 14 years of bloody fighting, more than 35 million compatriots were injured or killed, and countless martyrs built the Great Wall of Steel with their flesh and blood to resist foreign aggression. The answer is implicit in General Secretary Xi Jinping's insightful summary of "the patriotic sentiment of the rise and fall of the world and the responsibility of every individual, the national integrity of facing death with determination, the heroic spirit of not fearing violence and fighting to the end, and the unwavering and persevering belief in victory". This spirit is reflected in General Yang Jingyu's resolute determination to fight until the last moment despite having only cotton wool and grassroots in his stomach, demonstrated by Comrade Yan Baohang's unwavering loyalty in passing on information regardless of life and death, and further condensed in the great responsibility of millions of ordinary people who destroyed their homes and shared the national crisis.
Today's China has long bid farewell to the difficulties of "less steel and more gas", but the spiritual core of "more gas" has never changed. When I saw the debut of new strategic missiles, unmanned intelligent equipment, hypersonic weapons and other "national treasures" at the military parade, and saw new combat forces such as military aerospace and cyberspace moving forward with high heads, I deeply realized that the "Great Wall of Science and Technology" in the new era is the most vivid inheritance of the great spirit of the Anti Japanese War - back then, predecessors used their flesh and blood to protect the country; Today, we need to use technology to build the cornerstone of national security and development, especially to master independent and controllable core technologies in key areas of national defense and military industry, to ensure that the "national treasure" is not subject to others' control.
2、 The call of the times: from "studying abroad to serve the country" to "tackling technological challenges", flexible electronics help new breakthroughs in national defense and military industry
Looking back on the past, predecessors such as Qian Xuesen and Deng Jiaxian resolutely gave up the favorable conditions and living conditions abroad, and resolutely chose to return to China to serve, standing up the backbone of the nation with the glorious achievements of "two bombs and one satellite"; Today, our generation of returning overseas students should inherit the relay and bravely shoulder the sacred mission entrusted to us by the times in the unprecedented great changes.
At the beginning of this century, after returning to China, I led a team to explore the "no man's land" of advanced materials and flexible electronics, focusing on cutting-edge fields such as "organic electronics", "printed electronics", and "bioelectronics", and striving to overcome the "bottleneck" problem of flexible electronics in the national defense and military industry. The field of flexible
electronics is the forefront direction of the cross integration of new generation information technology and advanced materials. It is the underlying and fundamental technology of science and technology, and an important support and key foundation for the modernization of national defense and military industry. At the same time, it is nurturing the future industry of flexible electronics with the core feature of achieving ultra-high industrial added value.
For a long time, high-end flexible electronic materials and device technology have been monopolized by foreign countries. China relies on imports for key links such as flexible sensors in aerospace equipment, flexible display terminals in individual soldier systems, and flexible energy modules in intelligent protective equipment, which seriously restricts the independent controllability and performance improvement of national defense equipment. However, in recent years, we have achieved a series of significant innovative results, such as flexible perovskite solar cells, flexible intelligent sensors, and flexible electronic skins, which have not only promoted China's flexible electronics discipline from "following" to "running in parallel", but even reached the level of "leading" in some fields, providing direct services for the upgrading of national defense equipment and the generation of new combat capabilities. I deeply understand that the essence of studying abroad to serve the country lies in integrating personal ideals into national needs, breaking through bottleneck technologies with the perseverance of "ten years of sharpening a sword", using innovative achievements to assist national strategic security, and
forging new qualities of combat effectiveness.
As General Secretary Xi Jinping said, "In the new era and new journey, people of all ethnic groups in the country must inherit and carry forward the great spirit of resistance against Japan, and move forward with courage and determination." For us scientific and technological workers, "striving hard" means accurately identifying the "pain points" of national defense and military industry, while "moving forward with courage and determination" means being willing to be lonely and brave in exploring uninhabited areas, making flexible electronic technology the "hard core support" of national defense modernization.
3、 Future mission: From "80 years of victory" to "a new journey of rejuvenation", safeguard "a strong country and a strong military" with "technological self-reliance"
The mission of studying abroad to serve the country is not only to "do one's own thing well", but also to "build a solid technological foundation for national rejuvenation". At present, the international situation is constantly changing, and some countries that are hostile to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation are vigorously implementing technology blockades and "decoupling" strategies, attempting to curb the progress of China's high-end manufacturing industry and defense technology. Flexible electronics, as the core field of "next-generation electronic technology" and the growth pole of future industries, has become a strategic high ground for great power competition. Major developed economies and rapidly developing emerging economies around the world are taking the lead in layout.
As a science and technology worker who has returned from studying abroad, I always remember in my heart that patriotism is a basic ethics, serving the country is a solemn responsibility, and innovation is a sacred mission. In the future, I will continue to lead the advanced materials and flexible electronics team to deeply cultivate the application of flexible electronics in the fields of national defense, aerospace, and ocean engineering. I will continuously promote the deep integration of flexible electronics technology with artificial intelligence and brain
computer interfaces, develop intelligent wearable combat assistance systems, and comprehensively enhance soldiers' environmental perception, decision-making response, and collaborative combat capabilities. At the same time, it is necessary to strengthen collaborative innovation with national defense and military units such as aerospace, weapons industry, and public safety. In response to extreme environmental requirements such as thermal protection for hypersonic aircraft and flexible sensing for deep-sea equipment, key technological bottlenecks such as high-temperature resistant flexible materials and high-pressure resistant flexible packaging should be overcome to provide more reliable flexible electronic system solutions for "national key equipment".
Let us take the great spirit of resistance as the sail, and the breakthroughs in high-end advanced materials and flexible electronic technology as the twin oars, to bravely climb the technological peak in the "no man's land" of national defense, military industry, and aerospace fields. To comfort the martyrs with tangible achievements, repay the nurturing kindness of our motherland, and devote all our strength to building a stronger "Great Wall of Science and Technology", safeguarding national security and world peace!
